Description

1972 40’ Pacemaker

The forward bilge pump float switch failed while the port engine seawater cooling system was apart, and the seawater inlet seacock was not completely closed.  The last time owner looked in the bilge was three days prior to the loss. Water was reported a foot above the cabin sole in the forward and aft cabins when the Fire Department arrived. The owner pulled carpet and washed it, brought on a dehumidifier and ran it for weeks, replaced the float switch for the forward bilge Rule 2000 bilge pump, brought aboard a dedicated 12V Group 31 battery and portable battery charger to run the forward bilge pump.

  • Powering the boat are twin Cummins V504-M diesel engines rated at 197 hp each engine at 3000 rpm.
The port engine cooling system was reported to be undergoing maintenance with heat exchanger and seawater pump removed - no confirmation that this has been completed or not.
  • The Assigned Hull Number WNZ62049J272, and Builder’s Hull Number 40H204
  • The Side Power SE100/185T bow thruster motor and wiring were underwater and shorted out
  • The Side Power motor sits low in the forward bilge
  • The house bank, four North Star MSB.M12-210 battery terminals were above the waterline.
  • The battery terminals are clean and free of corrosion.
The batteries showed 12.8V when tested with a multi-meter.
  • Two 12V DC105-12 batteries outboard of the house bank were submerged along with two heavy battery fuses and Pro-Sport T20 battery charger.
  • Onan 8.5 kW diesel auxiliary generator, suspect water in oil due to high level, electric plant underwater, auxiliary generator 12V Group 24 start battery underwater.
  • 120V AC Campbell Hausfield two-gallon 110-psi air compressor was partially submerged.
  • lose enough to the reported waterline to be tested: Xantrex Freedom 25 inverter, condition unknown.

Apparently not affected are:

  • Starboard main engine and 12V 8D start battery.  The starboard engine was reported to have started and run after the loss incident, but a recent attempt to start it had failed.
  • Oil was checked on both engines, found normal levels, black oil.
  • Fluid in the Borg Warner AS14-72-C marine transmissions was clear, clean and normal level.
  • Engine starters and alternators appear normal.
